BGU, founded in 1969, is located in the Negev (southern desert area) of Israel in three campuses: Be'er Sheva, Sde Boqer and Eilat. It is a major research and teaching center with 17,500 students, more than 800 faculty members and over 1,000 Ph.D. students. BGU has a strong orientation towards various cleantech domains, including its world famous National Solar Energy Research Center - headed by Prof. David Faiman. The National Solar Energy Research Center is an active development center and test bed for any and all innovative solar energy systems. It is the home of the largest dish designed concentrated photovoltaic system in the world - the same dish that morphed into ZenithSolar. In this capacity, BGU is an active technology partner of ZenithSolar.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) conducts research on the technology needed to supply energy efficiently and on an environmentally sound basis in industrialized, threshold and developing countries. To this purpose, the Institute develops systems, components, materials and processes in the areas of the thermal use of solar energy, solar building, solar cells, electrical power supplies, chemical energy conversion, energy storage and the rational use of energy. The Institute's work ranges from fundamental scientific research relating to solar energy applications, through the development of production technology and prototypes, to the construction of demonstration systems. The Institute plans, advises and provides know-how and technical facilities as services.
In 1964, Azur Space Solar Power GmbH began developing and producing solar cells for space applications in Heilbronn, Germany as part of Telefunken GmbH. Since then more than 340 satellites have been equipped with Azur Space solar cells. More recently, Azur Space has been aggressively moving and applying its advanced solar cell technology to terrestrial solar concentration applications to generate clean electricity. ZenithSolar is working closely with Azur Space in both development and production capacities.
